The Canterbury Kings have been all over the shop with bat and with the ball. They have at times scored in excess of 180 runs but fallen like ninepins on other occasions. The bowlers performed astonishingly against the Auckland Aces but have been erratic on others.
Captain Cole McConchie has scored 155 runs in 4 innings and has looked a class above the rest of the batters. He made 83 out of a total of 135 against the Wellington Firebirds but that again was in a losing cause. Chad Bowes has scored 112 runs in 4 innings with the top score of 67 made against the Northern Districts. Stephen Murdoch made 54 against Otago but since then has added just 13 more runs. Andrew Ellis, Kyle Jamieson, Leo Carter, and Cam Fletcher are the other top order batsmen in the Canterbury lineup. They would need to start contributing a bit more with the bat if the Kings are to be competitive against the Central Stags.
Right-arm Fast bowler Kyle Jamieson is still at the top of the list of bowlers with the most number of wickets this season. He has captured 11 wickets so far with that magical spell of .6 for 7 against the Auckland Aces as his best. Andrew Ellis has captured 6 wickets so far with 3 for 35 against the Northern Knights being his best. Henry Shipley and Ed Nuttal are the other medium pace bowlers in the side along with Jeremy Benton as the primary spin bowler in the side. Benton has bowled his left-arm orthodox spin with good control and has ensured that he maintains a tight lid on the opponents scoring rate.
Right-handed top-order batsman and the captain of the side, Tom Bruce, is the leading run-scorer for the Central Districts. He has made 171 runs in total with a match-winning 88 not out against the Northern Knights as his top score. He also made 47 against the Otago Volts at Napier and has looked in great form. No other batter has gone past a total of 100 runs for the season and this is a big problem that they need to sort out as soon as possible. Dean Foxcroft indicated that he is capable of doing just that by making 56 against the Volts. George Worker, Dane Cleaver, Will Young, Josh Clarkson, and Kieran Noema-Barnett are the other top-order batsmen in the side. Worker and Cleaver must get the side off to a good start and allow Will Young to anchor the innings batting at number 3.
Left-arm medium pace bowler Ben Wheeler has now taken 7 wickets in the tournament with 4 for 26 against the Otago Volts being his best. Blair Tickner has 6 wickets under his belt with his 3 wicket burst against the Northern Knights being his best effort. Seth Rance and Doug Bracewell have missed a couple of games with the latter being part of the national team. We should see Bracewell return to the playing 11 for this match. George Worker and Ajaz Patel are the key spin bowlers in the side. The inclusion of test match player Patel is sure to liven the spirits of the Central Stags camp and they would hope that the all-rounder could do something good with both the bat and with the ball.
