How the match progressed in Sydney

Aaron Finch won the toss and decided to bat first in hot and humid conditions. He knew very well that the pitch would dry out as the game progressed making run-making difficult for the Indian batsmen during the chase. Aaron Finch opened the batting with wicket-keeper batsman Alex Carey and the pair made a circumspect start against the Indian new ball pair of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Khaleel Ahmed. Siddle was dismissed early while Carey fell during the 10th over of the innings. Usman Khawaja playing an ODI after quite a while scored his 5th half-century while Shawn Marsh continued his good firm with the bat with a 70-ball 54. Peter Handscomb played through till the 47th over scoring 73 off 61 deliveries inclusive of 6 fours and 2 sixes. Marcus Stoinis hit some lusty blows at the end putting on 34 runs with Glenn Maxwell. Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja bowled best for the Indians capturing 3 wickets between them while Bhuvneshwar Kumar captured 2 for 65 on his way to completing 100 ODI wickets.

India’s reply was in tatters by the end of the 4th over of the innings with Jhye Richardson and debutant left-arm seam bowler Jason Behrendorff combining to capture 3 wickets for just 4 runs. Shikhar Dhawan and Ambati Rayudu were dismissed for ducks while Kohli flicked the ball straight to mid-wicket to be dismissed for 3. Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni took their time in repairing the early damage. They put on 136 for the 4th wicket before Dhoni was unfortunately adjudged LBW for 51. Replays showed that the ball pitched outside leg stump but India had availed their allotted reviews by then. The asking rate mounted over 10 runs per over as the Aussie bowlers kept making the Indian batsmen hit to the longer side of the ground. The pressure began to tell on the Indian batters as Dinesh Karthik perished bowled off Richardson followed by Ravindra Jadeja and Rohit Sharma who were both caught in the deep. Bhuvneshwar Kumar tried hard to close the gap but it was a bit too beyond the capabilities of the talented all-rounder. Jhye Richardson recorded his best bowling figures in ODI cricket with 4 for 26 in 4 overs while Stoinis and debutant Behrendorff finished with 2 wickets apiece.

Some Stats from the past

India has met Australia in 128 ODI matches since 1980. India has won 10 matches and has lost on 73 occasions with 10 ending as a ‘no result’. India last toured Australia in 2015/16 where the Aussies won the ODI series 4 games to 1. India’s only win in that series came in the 5th and final ODI match of that series played at the Sydney Cricket Ground. They chased down a mammoth target of 331 runs for the loss of just 4 wickets with Manish Pandey scoring his maiden ODI century. Our online cricket betting tips predict that the Indians will be very confident of starting off well at a venue where they have done well in the past. What is in their favor is the fact that they are playing a team in turmoil and very low in confidence.

Team compositions

Australia will be happy about the performances of their players and would not want to change a winning combination. We do not expect them to make any changes for the 2nd ODI. The only worrying factor for the Aussies is the poor form of their captain Aaron Finch. The burly right-hander has not done much after the tri-nation series in Zimbabwe last year and is under pressure to perform. Glenn Maxwell got just 3 overs to face during the last match since the top-order performed admirably well with the bat. Maxwell might be used as a floater should the top-order get the side into an even stronger position. Usman Khawaja and Peter Handscomb will be expected to play sheet anchor roles allowing the likes of Shawn Marsh and Marcus Stoinis play attacking innings around them. Billy Stanlake, Nathan Lyon and Peter Siddle bowled steadily during the 1st match giving good support to Richardson and Behrendorff. Our ODI betting tip expects to see more of the same on Tuesday.

India will keep a close eye on the performances of Ambati Rayudu and Dinesh Karthik. Number 4 and 6 are two positions still not properly nailed down by the Indians and the players will be under immense pressure to perform with Kedar Jadhav breathing down their necks. MS Dhoni felt the heat in Sydney during his knock on Saturday. The legend kept running hard between the wickets as usual but was often seen huffing and puffing in between overs. Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli will look to put the failure during the 1st match behind them while Rohit will look to score his 8th century against the Aussies here. There is also an injury cloud over Mohammad Shami, which may result in Umesh Yadav playing instead of Shami. India will keep a close eye on Bhuvneshwar’s progress leading up to the world cup plus look at the possibility of getting Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav bowling in tandem.

ODI betting tip

Australia has played 51 ODI matches at the Adelaide Oval winning 37 of them. The Oval is thus a happy hunting ground for the Aussies. Australia has played India at the Oval on 5 occasions dating back to 1986. India won their only ODI at the venue in 2012. Past records are certainly against the Indians.

Our ODI betting tip for this match is as follows. We predict that the Aussies will continue their resurgence by defeating India in the 2nd ODI. The win will give the Aussies only their 5th ODI series win since winning the 2015 cricket world cup. So, there is a lot to achieve for the Aussies.
